而今年原本有三名女導演是受到廣泛關注：格蕾塔·葛韋格（Greta Gerwig，姬達·嘉域）憑光芒四射的改編版《小婦人》（Little Women，另譯《她們》）備受期待，此外《別告訴她》（The Farewell）的王子逸（Lulu Wang）和《鄰里美好的一天》（A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood，《在晴朗的一天出發》）的瑪麗埃爾·海勒（Marielle Heller）同樣曾被認為有望獲得提名。

I used to defend the #OscarNoms because it starts in the studio system making Women and POC films to be able to be nominated. You can’t nominate what isn’t made. But this year there are plenty of incredible movies that deserved the nominations over Non-POC. Just Disappointing.

不過，對於今年的提名名單種族多元性不足仍有不少詬病。事實證明，無論是《我們》（Us）中的露皮塔·尼永奧（Lupita Nyong'o）、《別告訴她》中的奧卡菲娜（Awkwafina），還是《我叫多麥特》（Dolemite Is My Name）中的艾迪·墨菲（Eddie Murphy，艾迪·梅菲），都沒有獲得提名。事實上，三部電影都被拒於所有提名之外。
她在2016年憑借參演百老匯作品《紫色姐妹花》（The Color Purple）贏得托尼獎，並憑這部音樂劇的錄音版贏得格萊美。此外，她還憑美國全國廣播公司（NBC）節目《今日秀》（Today）當中的表演而贏得日間時段艾美獎（Daytime Emmy）——只不過《洛杉磯時報》指出，一些人在計算EGOT的時候並不會將日間艾美獎計算在內。
六年前，《冰雪奇緣》贏得了兩項奧斯卡獎——最佳動畫長片和最佳電影歌曲《Let It Go》，當之無愧。
這一次，續集主題曲《Into the Unknown》獲得最佳電影歌曲提名——但是在最佳動畫長片類別卻受到了冷落。
最終，最佳動畫長片獲提名的作品是《玩具總動員4》（Toy Story 4，《反斗奇兵4》）、《大冒險家》（Missing Link，《遺失的環節》）、《馴龍高手3》（How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World）、《隻手探險》（I Lost My Body，《我失去了身體》）以及《克勞斯：聖誕節的秘密》（Klaus）。最後一部是網飛（Netflix）的聖誕節動畫片，獲得提名令很多人意外。
8. 奧斯卡寵兒們的回歸
阿爾·帕奇諾上一次獲提名奧斯卡已經是1993年的事。
今年，有不少過去曾備受奧斯卡青睞的影星又再度回歸這個舞台。
阿爾·帕奇諾（Al Pacino，阿爾·帕仙奴）第九度獲得奧斯卡提名。這一次是憑他在馬丁·斯科塞西（Martin Scorsese，馬田·史高西斯）的《愛爾蘭人》（The Irishman）中飾演的司機兄弟會負責人吉米·霍法（Jimmy Hoffa）。這是他繼1993年之後再次獲得提名，當時他憑《聞香識女人》（Scent of a Woman）奪得小金人。
安東尼·霍普金斯爵士（Sir Anthony Hopkins，安東尼·鶴堅斯）憑《教宗的承繼》自1998年以來再度獲得提名，他本人的第五次。
